Foam Details
2# density* 4’”- 2” taper R value average at 40 degrees R- 14.3
As a comparison, a 4” average thickness air space in other cover designs has a value of only R-1.0
* Weight per cubic foot
Strength and Weight
Flexing strength of 2# Virgin EPS (expanded polystyrene) is 50 PSI
Weight for 2 EPS cores for a 96” x 96” hot tub cover is 39 lbs.
Channel
A 2” galvanized steel ‘C’ channel is installed in every foam core for strength in the hinge area of the cover.
The channel is installed to nearly the very end of the foam cores and padded for protection against flexing.
As a comparison, steel channel is stronger, more flexible, and more durable than it’s brittle aluminum counterpart.
LDPE Heat Sealed Vapor Barrier
2 layers of 4 mil thickness LDPE (low density polyethylene) are independently heat sealed at all edges which protects the foam cores from water and vapor absorption.
Our 4 mil LDPE is tinted blue to ensure a quality heat seal with no seal voids against the white EPS foam.
As a comparison, 4 mil LDPE is 33% thicker than 3 mil material, providing better moisture absorption protection.
